How to Hang Valances

Hanging a window valance is a relatively easy way to make your windows look terrific. You can hang a valance by itself, with shades, or with curtains for a very elegant look. Window valances come in all shapes and styles so you will want to decide on a shape that suits the size and fee of the room you are decorating.

Things You'll Need

  • A rod or wood
  • Desired fabric
  • Metal brackets and screws if building a wood valance.
  • Hanging a pre-made valance is relatively easy. Once you have taken measurements of the window you can buy a pre-made valance or you can build your own. The key is place the valance so the material does not hang more than 1/3 or the way down from the top of the window.

  • For a small window you will need two mounting brackets and four screws for each bracket. For larger applications you will use mounting brackets in the middle of the valance run. Typically the outside brackets will be mounted on the left/right most edge and slightly above the top of the window. You need enough fabric to cover the run and the rod. You will want to decide what you think looks best. Have a friends hold the rod above the window and stand back and take a look. There is no set rule that says you have to mount the valance above the window. I have seen treatments that look quite nice hung below the top of the frame.

  • Once you have decided where you would like to mount the brackets, mark off where the first bracket will go. Measure the distance from the top of the window and the side. Place the second bracket on the other side using the same measurements. The rod will fit into the teeth of the bracket and then you can extend out the length of the rod and fit it into the other bracket. I would make sure this all is even before you drape the fabric through the rod. You can use a level to make minor adjustments to the rod if you need to.

  • Once the rod is in place on the brackets, loop your valance fabric through and you are done.
