Make a Heart-Shaped Cake for Valentines Day

Would you like to make a heart-shaped cake for your Valentine sweetie, but don't have a heart-shaped cake pan? No worries... here are directions for making a heart-shaped cake without a mold.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your favorite cake mix.
  • Eggs
  • Vegetable oil or applesauce.
  • Frosting.
  • Cake decorations or sprinkles. (Optional).
  • 9 X 9 square pan.
  • 9" round pan.
  1. Step 1

Preheat oven according to package directions on cake mix. Grease and flour one 9" round pan & one 9x9" square pan.

  2. Step 2

Mix water, oil and eggs with cake mix, according to package directions. You may substitute applesauce for vegetable oil if desired. I recommend using cage-free eggs. You will pay a little more for them, but it is worth it for the sake of humane treatment of the chickens! After mixing, pour 1/2 the batter into the square pan and the other 1/2 into the round pan.

  3. Step 3
    Assembling the cake.
    Assembling the cake.

Bake cake according to package directions. Don't forget to turn the oven from pre-heat to bake. (I've made this mistake a few times!) After cakes have been removed from the oven and cooled, remove them from the pans. Now you are ready to begin assembling your valentine cake. Place the square shape on your serving dish. Turn it so that one corner is pointing towards you - to make a diamond shape. Now cut the round cake in 1/2. Place 1/2 of the round cake at the top left side of the diamond, and the other 1/2 at the top right side. This forms your cake shape.

  4. Step 4

This is what your cake looks like when you put the pieces together. I used a pizza wheel as a serving platter. In the good old days of record albums, people used to cover and album with aluminum foil and use it as a serving dish for this cake. (Then the "serving dish" became the gift as well!)

  5. Step 5

Frost your cake. For a delicious butter-cream frosting recipe, see the link below. If desired, decorate with cake sprinkles. If you have leftover candy canes from Christmas, crush them up and sprinkle them over the cake for tasty and colorful cake decorations. Enjoy your cake with someone special!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have dogs, be sure that they do not get into your chocolate cake or any other valentine chocolates because chocolate can be fatal to dogs!

on 2/9/2009 Great article. Love the photos! We may not use records anymore but love that gift idea. Maybe there is something else to use that is approximately the same size? A thin book or photo album maybe. Gets the ideas really flowing. Thanks. 5 stars
