Although ties aren't as popular as they once were, they are still worn by a lot of professional businessmen. Many who wear them also choose to wear a tie tack or tie clip to hold the colorful accessory in place. Tie clips, in particular, have experienced a strong resurgence in the last couple of years. Because they are simple and classic, tie clips are very popular.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase a tie clip if you don't already own one. They can be purchased at jewelry stores, major department stores, discount department stores and some specialty stores.

  2. Step 2

Decide on the type of tie clip to be worn. Try matching the metal tone to other jewelry such as cufflinks, rings or watches. Better still, think about mixing metals for a more eclectic and modern look.

  3. Step 3

Put on and button down the shirt that will be worn with the tie and clip. If you intend to clip the tie and the shirt together, make certain all of the shirt buttons are strong enough to hold as the shirt strains under normal movement.

  4. Step 4

Choose the tie to be worn with the clip. Make certain it is of a fabric that will not be damaged by the clip.

  5. Step 5

Tie the tie as desired. Be sure that its 2 tails are of equal length or that the underneath tail of the tie does not hang below the upper tail.

  6. Step 6

Activate the spring-loaded mechanism of the tie clip by pinching it between the thumb and the forefinger. Open the clip wide enough to slip it into place over the tie (and shirt, if desired).

  7. Step 7

Adjust the clip to the position desired on the tie. It should be placed within the top two-thirds of the tie length.

  8. Step 8

Make sure the clip is tight. The pinching mechanism that holds the clip into place can become loosened over time and may require tightening.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a plain or engraved metal tie clip or try one that is enhanced with gemstones, enameling or logo designs. Shirts, ties and particularly tie clips are a wonderful way to represent various aspects of your personality and fashion sense. Tie clips hold ties down and prevent them from flapping loosely in the air, getting into food, or finding their way into file drawers or paper shredders. Tie clips can be attached on either the right or left side of the tie.
  • Avoid using a tie clip on pure silk, as the pinching mechanism may bite into the tie, ruining it.
