Step 1
If you've traveled anywhere, you probably have some souvenirs already that will fit on the tree. Even something like a key ring, jewelry or a drink coaster can be converted into a tree ornament. If you have shawl or special fabric brought back from a vacation, arrange it around the bottom of the tree as a tree skirt.
-
Step 2
On future trips, bring back ornament-sized souvenirs. This saves lots of space in the luggage over ordinary sized momentos. Look for handmade pieces that reflect the country you are visiting. Is the region noted for it's wood carving, weaving, pottery or other craft?
-
Step 3
It's great if you can find the items for your international-themed Christmas tree through traveling. If you can't afford trips, you can still have your themed tree. Look for ornaments or small objects that remind you of exotic places. Look in places like Pier One Imports around the holiday season. Look in museum stores and import or ethnic stores.
-
Step 4
Search the internet for nonprofit organizations that sell European, South American, African, and other regional items to support their good work in that region. I've listed some links below for a few of these.
-
Step 5
You can also make ornaments to fit your international-themed tree. Try embroidery, felt craft and others.

on 1/31/2009 Great idea for a tree. I recently saw a tree decorated with little Happy Meal toys. How fun! Imagination is a great thing to have.

on 1/17/2009 If I decorated all the trees with the themes I have, we would not have room for presents. I like the international theme as a learning tool as mentioned in the prior comment.
