Step 1
Baking SodaSoak all diapers and covers in a cold wash. Do not add any detergent. You can add in a small amount of baking soda if the diapers have a real strong smell to them. Let the cycle finish.
-
Step 2
Free and Clear 7th GenerationSecond and last wash cycle set the washer to HOT and add in 1/4 amount of laundry detergent. Remember do not use any detergent with perfumes, dyes, bleach or fabric softeners. Best detergent is any Free and Clear kind that you may be able to find. Purex makes one that is safe on diapers. If your washer is able to set a temp for the rinse cycle set it to cold.
-
Step 3
Pretty Diaper CoverAfter the two wash cycles dry them on high heat. Again do not use Fabric Softener sheets! After the first cycle take out the covers. You can hang the covers to let them dry instead of putting them in the dryer. If prefolds/diapers are not fully dry, dry them for 30 more minutes.

Step 4
Remember cold water is to soak and get stains out. Hot water is to sanitize and wash the diapers.

on 1/9/2009 TO OsaraO: It does save a ton. Just have to be careful on purchasing diapers. It can be addictive. Diapers have come along way since the prefold/plastic covers. There are a ton of cute diapers!

on 1/9/2009 To 482main: Yea some people still do the wet pail but some learned that a wet pail soak deteriorates the covers so they switched to a dry pail and do laundry every 2 days or so.

on 1/9/2009 I know that cloth diapers can save a lot of money but I've always wondered how people clean them. Now I know.

on 1/9/2009 In the old days, we used to soak the diapers in a diaper pail with a solution of Borax dissolved in water.
