Maybe you have fond memories of your trip to Australia or you just love the mystique of the land-down-under. Whatever your reason, celebrate Christmas with an Aussie themed Christmas tree. Here's how to do this.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you've traveled to Australia, you probably have some souvenirs already that will fit on the tree. Even something like a key ring, jewelry or a drink coaster can be converted into a tree ornament. If you have a plush sheepskin, drape it around the bottom of the tree as a tree skirt.

  2. Step 2

Bringing back ornament-sized souvenirs from trips saves lots of space in the luggage. Look for handmade pieces that reflect Australia's culture and history. Coober Pedy is noted for it's opals, Tasmania for it's Tasmanian devil, and there's aboriginal art too.

  3. Step 3

Look for iconic Aussie ornaments. Everyone recognizes the Sydney Opera House or the harbor bridge. Colorful fish bring back memories of snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

  4. Step 4

It's great if you can find the items for your Aussie-themed Christmas tree in Australia. If you can't afford such a trip, you can still have your themed tree. Look for ornaments or small objects that remind you of Australia. You see lots of sheep in Australia, so sheep ornaments fit with your theme.

  5. Step 5

Keep your eyes open to find Australian items suitable for tree ornaments in many places. Good spots are museum gift shops, zoo shops or any shop that specializes in imports or ethnic handicrafts. Look for a koala ornament.

  6. Step 6

You can also make ornaments to fit your Australian-themed tree. Try embroidery, felt craft and others. Find a simple outline of a kangaroo and draw it on felt. Cut it out, sew around the edges and stuff it with cotton. Now you have a kangaroo ornament.

  7. Step 7

If you brought back sea shells from the Ninty-Mile Beach, add them to your tree decorations. See the link below to an article about making ornaments from sea shells.

on 1/10/2009 What a great idea, and I think it'd be a nice way to teach children about other lifestyles in other countries! 5*
