A yule Log makes a great Holiday decoration.
A yule Log makes a great Holiday decoration.

Burning a Yule Log on the Winter Solstice or on Christmas Eve is an ancient tradition in parts of Europe, and is supposed to bring luck to your household. A traditional Yule Log is decorated and burned in a fireplace, but you can still have a Yule Log, and burn it, too, even if you don't have a fireplace.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A log, 18 inches long, and 4 to 6 inches in diameter
  • a drill
  • a saw
  • three candles
  • ribbons and greenery to decorate it
  1. Step 1

Select your log and check it well for six-legged hitchhikers before you bring it inside. Use a saw to slice an inch from one side to give the log a flat base.

  2. Step 2

Use the drill with a 1/2 to 3/4 inch bit (size the holes to fit your candles) to drill three holes, evenly spaced, along the top of the log.

  3. Step 3

Use hot glue to attach holly, evergreen, ribbons, mistletoe, or other decorations of your choice to the log. You can use real greenery or silk. Real plant material will dry out and become very flammable, however.

  4. Step 4

Put your candles in the holes. You can use green, gold, silver, white, red, or a mix of holiday colors to match your decor.

  5. Step 5

Light the candles on either the Winter Solstice or Christmas Eve and let them burn. Enjoy your beautiful Holiday decoration.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a great project to make with the kids.
  • Use power tools with caution.
  • Never let candles burn unsupervised.
