Make your own inexpensive peppermint hot cocoa.

Nothing warms a child's tummy like hot cocoa on a winter's day. Regular cocoa is a welcome treat and peppermint cocoa is even tastier to some. If you're breaking out the packets of cocoa mix, you're using more money than necessary. Make a large batch of peppermint hot cocoa mix. In just a few minutes you'll have enough cocoa powder to warm months of snowy weather, or plenty to package and give as holiday gifts to lucky friends.

  • 2-1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa

Instructions

    • 1

Place 40 round red-and-white peppermint candies into a food processor. Pulse the candies until they turn into a powder. If you don't have a food processor, place the candies in a large zip-top bag and hit them with a rolling pin or other large object until they are crushed.

    • 2

Pour 3 cups of powdered sugar, 3 cups of coffee creamer powder, 2-1/4 cups of unsweetened cocoa and the powdered peppermint candy into a large bowl. Stir the ingredients with a large spoon until they are completely mixed.

    • 3

Spoon the cocoa powder into zip-top bags. Close the bags and store them in a cool, dry place until you're ready to use them or give them as gifts.

    • 4

Measure 3 heaping tbsp. into a coffee mug. Fill the mug with simmering hot water. Stir the mixture until all the powder dissolves. Enjoy the peppermint hot cocoa.

Tips & Warnings

  • Slip bags of the peppermint hot cocoa mix into festive holiday mugs to give as gifts.

  • Use 10 leftover candy canes instead of the round mints for an even more frugal mix.
