Step 1
Decide on the overall color scheme of your Christmas tree. It could be all gold, red & gold & green, red & silver, pink & white - the options are endless. The color scheme should compliment the color scheme of the room it is going into. There are many non traditional Christmas ornament colors available to decorate with this year, such as plum, olive green, and navy, that will give your tree an updated look.
-
Step 2
Purchase Christmas ornaments that compliment your color scheme decor. Ornaments in a multi-pack work great because they are usually less expensive, however purchase different types of multi-packs so not all the ornaments look exactly alike. I would suggest 5-10 ornaments per foot height of tree. If your color scheme is more natural, consider using natural elements such as twigs and pine cones.
-
Step 3
Purchase your butterfly Christmas ornaments. Since butterflies are the theme, these ornaments should be special and follow the overall color scheme. Consider purchasing butterfly ornaments that are at least the size of your fist so that they attract attention. I would suggest 10 butterfly ornaments per foot height of tree.
-
Step 4
After the lights are on and you have checked that they are working properly, decorate your Christmas tree with the garlands, florals, ribbons, and any non ornament that you have purchased.
-
Step 5
Add any the natural elements (if you have decided to use natural elements) to your Christmas tree. Put them towards the center of the tree. After that, decorate using your non-butterfly ornaments evenly over the tree. Periodically step back and look at your decorating progress. Keep decorating by putting the ornaments on evenly until you run out. I would suggest larger ornaments towards the bottom of your tree and your smaller ornaments towards the top of your tree. Do not put ornaments on the very edges of your tree because that is where the butterflies are going.
-
Step 6
Add all of your butterfly Christmas ornaments to the tips of your Christmas tree, as if the butterflies just landed there. That location will be most visible and make the butterflies the focal point of your Christmas tree.
