Propose During Christmas
Propose During Christmas

It's the most wonderful time of the year, and you've decided to propose to the love of your life. If need ideas about how to propose during Christmas, look no further! Whether indoor or outdoor, with the family or alone, here are some great suggestions for romantic ways to make her say, "Yes!"

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure that now is the right time to propose. The rest of the holidays could be very awkward if she isn't ready and has to say no. If you have been dating exclusively for quite a while and have enthusiastically talked about marriage, maybe the time is right. If you are in doubt, maybe it's time to ask her family and friends about whether she has mentioned anything that might indicate that she wants to marry you.

  2. Step 2
Christmas offers a lot of unique opportunities to propse.

Christmas offers a lot of unique opportunities to propse.

Choose a proposal that will be memorable and unique to you as a couple. Are you very intimate and private? A one-on-one proposal is probably best. If you are very close with each other's families, however, there is no better time than Christmas to include them in the happy moment. Are you an adventurous couple? Doing something outside might be fun. Do you prefer to stay cozy and warm? Cuddle up next to each other inside for your romantic moment.

  3. Step 3
    You know your sweetie best!

Know your girlfriend. The suggestions below are only a few ideas and can be used as a springboard for your own unique holiday surprise!

  4. Step 4
Allowing her to choose the ring ensures that she will love it!

Allowing her to choose the ring ensures that she will love it!

On Christmas Eve, you could let her know that you have to do some last minute gift shopping and need her advice. Drive to a mall or a jewelry store (make sure it is open). Before you get to the jewelry store, find a nice place to stop, whether out in the snow or inside the mall in a little café. Let her know specific things that you love about her and anything else you feel you want to say. Then get down on one knee and propose. Then you can pick out her ring - it'll be the best Christmas present of her life!

  5. Step 5
A beautiful winter landscape might be just the place.

A beautiful winter landscape might be just the place.

Take her outside for a walk. Have prepared ahead of time a little setup in a park, the backyard, or anywhere else where there is snow. (This may require an accomplice.) Have a little table and chairs set up with hot cocoa and some cookies ready. To make it more ambient, roll up some snow balls and make pyramids with them. Have the inside be hollow and light a tea candle inside each of them. As you sit and enjoy your treat, pop the question!

  6. Step 6
Hide a special package under the tree.

Hide a special package under the tree.

If you want family to be present, at least let the parents know ahead of time that you are going to propose. Tie a gift-wrapped box with the ring inside to the trunk of the tree, or hang it as an ornament somewhere that is out of sight of where she is sitting. When presents are being passed out, ask whoever is distributing them to not mention that present until the end. When everything has settled, have him or her say, "Wait, I think there's another present for you over here" and point to where the box is. Have her go over and pick it up. Stay close by and when she opens the gift, get down on one knee and propose.

  7. Step 7
A nice frame makes your picture even better looking.

A nice frame makes your picture even better looking.

Give her a nice framed enlargement of a picture of the two of you. It should be one where you are very happy (or one that is sentimental), preferably one that you know she likes (or a surprise one that she hasn't seen yet). When she opens it, say, "Do you know what I want more than anything for Christmas? I want to know that we can be that happy together every day for the rest of our lives." Ask her to marry you.

  8. Step 8
Consider proposing at her favorite hometown hangout.

Consider proposing at her favorite hometown hangout.

If you are visiting her hometown, tell her that you want to visit her favorite place while you are out there. It could be a restaurant, a museum, a beautiful place in nature, or anywhere that has special meaning to her. Plan your proposal around that place to make it have extra meaning.

  9. Step 9
    Include a little puppy love.

    Include a little puppy love.

Is there a special pet in her life? Involve it in the proposal. Have a cozy evening by the fireplace. When the time is right, cue an accomplice to usher in the dog, cat or other pet. Ahead of time, have the ring tied around its neck. Proceed to propose.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't worry about what to say when you propose. The more sincere and from the heart, the more she'll melt.
  • Bring kleenex. I cried for over two hours after my fiancé proposed, so be prepared!
  • If you don't already have a ring sized to her, consider getting a nice fake that she can wear until the real one is sized.
  • Be extra, extra sure that she will accept your proposal since it is a holiday. If it is still a question mark in your head, you could wait for Valentine's Day or at least New Year's Eve.

on 3/3/2009 How sweet! A friend of mine proposed on Xmas as soon as he got off the plane to meet his girlfriend, dressed as Santa being led by 18 fellow passengers (all strangers) who agreed to wear reindeer antlers and carry letters that spelled out, "Will you merry me?" (Of course, this was back when we could go up to the gates to meet our deplaning friends and family!) The local press were contacted by the flight crew ahead of time and it was on the news through the holiday week!
