With more and more people becoming concerned not only about the environment but also with indoor pollution, it's not wonder that non-toxic cleaning solutions are becoming popular. Fortunately, protecting your family's respiratory health is possible while maintaining a clean and germ-free house using mainly white vinegar. The germ-killing property in vinegar is found in its high acidic level, for anything lower than a PH of 2.6 will kill germs. Therefor you can clean anything from fruit to toilet bowls with the same product!

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

To disinfect, fill a spray bottle with full-strenth vinegar. Spray area and let sit for 30 seconds before wiping clean. For the toilet, simply pour 2-3 cups into the bowl and leave for a few minutes before flushing. The full strength spray is also great to disinifect wood cutting boards . . . wash with soap and water, the spray the vinegar on before wiping dry.

  2. Step 2

For a general all-purpose cleaner, use 1 part vinegar to 1 part water, or even 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water if the smell is bothersome to you. This can be used on everything from counters to carpet stains.

  3. Step 3

Studies show that using full-strength 3% hydrogen peroxide in addition to full-strength white vinegar will increase the germ-killing properties. If you choose to add peroxide, just fill a separate spray bottle and use in conjunction with the vinegar spray. Allow to sit for 30 seconds before wiping.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soak your kitchen and bathroom sponges in a bowl of white vinegar overnight. They'll be clean and bacteria free in the morning!
  • If the vinegar smell bothers you, add a few drops of lavender oil or lemon juice
  • Using distilled water will also prevent an overwhelming smell
  • Use vinegar on mildew areas. Apply full-strength, let sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe with a paper towel dampened with warm water. Use a scrub brush for difficult jobs.
