Home Remedies for Cat Urine

Cute and furry cats can melt your heart. That same cat can make you wrinkle your nose when your carpet smells of cat urine. Probably one of the hardest odors to get out of a carpet or clothing, cat urine is important to treat immediately. The best remedy is starting your cat out when a kitten to use the litter box and keeping the litter box clean to encourage your cat to use it instead of the carpet. Also be sure your cat is in good health, since health problems can be one reason a cat will urinate anywhere but the litter box.

Instructions

1. Soak up as much urine as possible with a rag or paper towel. Press firmly if on a carpet or rug. Replace a rag or paper towel with a new one repeating until no more urine is lifted up. Use a small steam cleaner on the carpet or rug to help suck up rest of the urine from the spot.

2. Mix together 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water in a clean spray bottle. Spray the carpet spot just until wet with the mixture, but not soaking. Use a clean rag and rub mixture into the spot. Soak up the excess moist by pressing a clean rag onto the spot until it comes up dry. Sprinkle baking soda over the spot. If the urine was on a hardwood floor wipe up the urine and then clean the spot with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water using a mop or clean rag. Dry well.

3. Put hydrogen peroxide into a clean spray bottle. Spray the peroxide over the baking soda. Use a clean brush or rag and rub the mixture into the spot in the carpet. Be sure to test the peroxide on a small amount of the carpet to make sure it will not discolor the carpet. Let the area dry for up about an hour. Vacuum well.

4. Add a few drops of Listerine mouthwash to the mixture of vinegar and water. This is a common remedy that helps to eliminate odors. In place of the Listerine, try a couple drops of wintermint essential oil.
