Sketch a swirl on the page. This swirl makes up the center of the rose, the section of the rose that may still be closed. The swirl gives the impression that many petals are close together. The swirl does not have to be perfect, as the center of a rose will look more natural if it is not exact. The shape of the swirl can be more like a circle or it can be more like an oval. End the swirl off to the left and unconnected to the rest of the line.

    • 2

Add a vase shape to the bottom of the swirl. This vase shape makes up the bottom of the petals of the rose. Use light pencil lines to draw the vase shape, as you will be erasing some of these lines later. Learn to draw a rose by also adding a V to the bottom of the swirl. The V turns into a few of the petals.

    • 3

Draw the petals of the rose. To give the effect of the rose having many petals, draw at least two petals. As you can see in the image, one of the petals is across the front of the flower. Erase the extra lines that are unnecessary, once you have each petal drawn to your specifications.

    • 4

Create the stem of the rose. Draw the leaves and thorns onto the stem. A rose does not have many leaves, nor does it have many thorns. Remember that you can erase a leaf or thorn if you are not happy with its shape or location.

    • 5

Sketch detail on the rose. Add veins to the leaves of the rose and shade the stem. This is a good time to shade the petals of the rose and make certain that the lines and shape of the rose are to your liking. Darken the outline of the rose and adjust lines and shading as needed.
