How to Turn a Walk-in Closet into a Nursery

When you find out that you are expecting a baby, usually one of the first things that comes to mind is how much this baby can cost. There are many items that parents, especially new parents, will need to purchase, and when you add it all up, you may find yourself looking for ways that you can cut back on the expense of having a new little one. One great way to cut back on costs is to turn a large walk-in closet into a baby nursery, rather than purchasing a house or renting an apartment right away that will offer the baby its own room.

Instructions

1. Clear everything out of the closet and vacuum the closet floor. If the closet has shelves that need to be dusted, then make sure that you do this as well. Remember, while babies may not be made of glass, they are more fragile than adults, and therefore you want to make sure that their living space is nice and clean.

2. 

   Consider how your baby's nursery is going to look from right outside the door with the baby's furniture situated in different ways. The last thing you probably want is for it to look like your baby is sleeping in a closet, so take this into consideration when deciding where things should go. If you can't give up the whole closet to the baby because you still need to use at least part of it for storage, then try to group the things that you need to store in the closet into one area. You will probably want there to be at least a little open floor space in view through the door of the closet.

3. 

   Keep any items of yours that will remain in the closet in their own area and as separated from the baby's things as possible so that it doesn't appear as though you are simply storing the baby away with your other belongings. Also, keep your items as neat as possible if they must remain in the closet.

4. 

   Choose a wall to place the crib up against that will allow you to both maximize open floor space as well as have handy storage for diaper and clothing changes in the crib.

5. 

   Purchase a wall organizer, such as the one pictured, that can be hung on a wall near the crib so that all your diapering supplies can be handy without taking up precious floor space.

6. 

   Place a bookshelf under the baby's clothes if you are going to hang them, so you are only using up floor space that is already kind of used up because of the clothes hanging above it, making it hard to really use the floor space below those clothes. Also, make sure that the shelf is very organized.

7. 

   Use any built-in shelving that will remain out of baby's reach to store clothes items that can't be hung in stackable bins that you label and extra boxes of diapers that you will probably receive from others.

8. 

   Make sure that you utilize every inch of space that you possibly can; use weird gaps between the wall and pieces of furniture to tuck away baby gear that collapses down to a small size. Also, don't forget to use the space under the crib.
