Camping in a Thunderstorm

Camping in a thunderstorm isn't always dangerous but only takes an unexpecting turn to make it a bit more so. This can be unsettling if you aren't prepared, so always make sure you have a plan, should a thunderstorm come. The following tips will help you enjoy your outing, and be prepared for a thunderstorm so you can relax and enjoy yourself.

1. 

   Choose an open space away from trees. More than likely you are camping at a campground, but this doesn't always mean you won't pick a site with many surrounding trees. Try to choose one that won't put you in danger, should a thunderstorm occur. If the tree becomes struck by lightning or the winds become heavy you don't want to worry about a tree hitting your tent.

2. Choose a campground site or camping area that isn't in a place that is too high or low. Camping on spots in high places could put you at risk if it is lightning during a thunderstorm ,and camping in low places could put you at risk for flooding. Choose an even spot that has a run-off for water and nearby protection for hail or other perils that come with storms.

3. 

   Keep a weather radio. You can use a portable radio and keep it on a weather station or use the radio in your car to periodically check the weather. If there is chance for thunderstorms to develop or worse weather, you will be aware as soon as it announced on the weather channel. It's always best to be prepared.

4. Pack rain gear. Preparing for a thunderstorm can make it a lot easier when enduring one. Make sure your tents are securely covered so no rain can get in. Keep rain coats and any other covers in case you need to cover your belongings, or other items.

• If you don't feel comfortable staying in your tent during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in your vehicle and keep all windows up.
