How to Use Antique Sewing Machine Drawers to Decorate a Home

Collecting antiques is a very personal treasure hunt. People love old things because of the colors, materials and emotions attached to the item. Although collecting antiques can be a pricey endeavor, smaller and more common items can be quite affordable. They can still give your home the look and feel you desire. Antique sewing machine drawers are beautiful, affordable and plentiful in the market. Not everyone has the room or desire for an antique sewing machine, but the drawers hold all the charm and details in a fraction of the space.

Instructions

1. 

   Fill the drawers with small plants. Line the drawer with a plastic bag and fill the drawer space with two or three small plants. Ivy plants and cactus do well and are available in smaller sizes perfect for a grouping. Old wood and green foliage is a perfect match.

2. 

   Hold miscellaneous items like your TV remotes and the latest movie rentals. All those little living room items fit nicely into the top of an antique draw. It can help the room look inviting without the mess.

3. 

   Create a message center or phone area. The long narrow shape of the drawer is perfect to hold memo pads, phone books and all those other sundries you might need by the phone.

4. Let them hold some votive candles in the kitchen. Fill the drawer with small glass votive candle holders, Let them light up any table in a special way that will inspire your guests. You can fit four or five candles in the drawer, but don’t place them directly in the wood itself.

5. Set a drawer on the back of your toilet tank. Fill it with washcloths and decorative soaps. Again, the narrow and long shape is perfect for the tank-top. It can organize all your guest needs. Roll up color coordinated wash cloths. Stack up some pretty soap to finish off the look.

6. Organize your desk space by placing computer compact discs and software manuals. Keep them right at your finger tips. Compact discs sit up nice and straight in your antique drawer. The combination of high tech and old wood will add a nice touch to your home office.

Tips & Warnings

• Look around. You can pick up antique sewing machine drawers at yard sales and antique malls at prices anywhere from five to fifteen dollars.

• Don't get a broken down box. Be sure your drawer is holding together well before your purchase.
