Things You'll Need:
- smoke alarm
- batteries
-
Step 1
Ideally, there should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each seperate sleeping area, and on every level in the house.
-
Step 2
There are (2) types of smoke detectors;
An Ionization smoke alarm is more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is more responsive to smoldering fires.
Use both types for the best protection. -
Step 3
Test every smoke detector monthly. To do this, press the button on the device. If it's working it will sound.
-
Step 4
Smoke detectors should be installed high, such as this one that's on the ceiling.Since smoke rises, install the smoke alarms high on a wall or on a ceiling. (but always follow manufacturer's instructions)
-
Step 5
Some smoke detectors will make a beeping noise when the battery is low.
Replace the battery immediately if this happens. -
Step 6
If you want your smoke detector to be hard-wired it must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Even if hard wired, keep a battery in the alarm as a backup in case of power failure. -
Step 7
Certain smoke detectors have an option for a recordable voice announcement (along with it's usual alarm sound.)
This feature might be be helpful in waking children through the use of a familiar voice. -
Step 8
A hearing impaired alarm has a strobe light. There are special smoke detectors for the hearing impaired, these will use strobe lights, or vibrations.
