Putting a smoke detector in proper places will help keep you & your family/pets safe.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • smoke alarm
  • batteries
  1. Step 1

    Ideally, there should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each seperate sleeping area, and on every level in the house.

  2. Step 2

    There are (2) types of smoke detectors;
    An Ionization smoke alarm is more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is more responsive to smoldering fires.

    Use both types for the best protection.

  3. Step 3
     

    Test every smoke detector monthly. To do this, press the button on the device. If it's working it will sound.

  4. Step 4
    Smoke detectors should be installed high, such as this one that's on the ceiling.

    Since smoke rises, install the smoke alarms high on a wall or on a ceiling. (but always follow manufacturer's instructions)

  5. Step 5
     

    Some smoke detectors will make a beeping noise when the battery is low.

    Replace the battery immediately if this happens.

  6. Step 6
     

    If you want your smoke detector to be hard-wired it must be installed by a qualified electrician.

    Even if hard wired, keep a battery in the alarm as a backup in case of power failure.

  7. Step 7

    Certain smoke detectors have an option for a recordable voice announcement (along with it's usual alarm sound.)

    This feature might be be helpful in waking children through the use of a familiar voice.

  8. Step 8
    A hearing impaired alarm has a strobe light.

    There are special smoke detectors for the hearing impaired, these will use strobe lights, or vibrations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save the paperwork (manufacturer's instructions) on your smoke detector for future testing and maintenance.
  • Always follow manufacurer's instructions carefully to assure your smoke detector works properly.
  • Check to see that the smoke alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
