Horsehair braid is applied to a hemline of floor length skirts, such as wedding dresses, to add body without adding weight to the hem. It supports the shape of the hem, remains flexable, and is machine washable.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Temporarily thread to mark your hemline.
Begin working on the side of the fabric facing up. Starting at a seam, pin the horsehair braid to the hem.

  2. Step 2

Temporarily secure the horsehair in place and turn the hem up. Pin into place and make sure it's at the desired length. Remove pins and let hem down. Sew along edge closest to the marked hem.
If there is thread that runs along the opposite edge, pull it, as this will pull up any extra length

  3. Step 3

Turn up the hem and adjust so it fits correctly. Sew to the underlining of skirt. The ends might be rough, if so you can cover them with a small piece of fabric.
