Buying a slipcover in a store can be very expensive. Instead of buying one of those expensive slipcovers why not make one yourself. Follow these steps and make your own slipcover.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

The first thing you must do is make a sketch of the lounge suite you plan on covering. By making a sketch you can determine how many pieces of fabric you need and where you will sew them together. Now measure your lounge suite. Once you get your measurements write them in on the sketch you made. This will help you determine how much fabric to buy. Don’t forget your sketch when you go to the store.

  2. Step 2

Pick out the fabric you plan on using. Since you want something that is going to last you want to select a good quality fabric. When picking out a fabric you want to choose a fabric that is closely woven and sturdy, like medium weight cotton. Note: you will need to buy extra yards of fabric, if you pick a fabric that has a pattern. Do not buy upholstery fabrics, they are heavy and hard to sew. Wash your fabric before you do anything to pre-shrink it.

  3. Step 3

Now lay your fabric, upside down, on the surface you plan on working on, I recommend working on the floor. Now look at your sketch and draw the pieces on the fabric according to your measurements. As you draw label each piece and then cut them about 1.5” inches bigger, all the way around, than your drawing. This will ensure that you will have enough extra material to sew the fabric together without taking away from the length of the cover

  4. Step 4

Now pin these pieces of fabric together. When you pin the fabric, pin it exactly to the measurements you wrote down. Place the pins 1.5” inches in from the edges of the pieces all the way around. This will leave you with enough fabric to sew and hem the cover.
Place the slipcover, upside down, over the lounge suit to see how it will fit. If you don’t need to re-pin anything then you are ready to start hemming and sewing the slipcover together. Be sure to finish all of your seams with a zigzag stitch.

  5. Step 5

Now put your slipcover on your lounge suite with the right side up and enjoy your new slip covered lounge suite.
