Your new pants need to be hemmed but you've never hemmed a pair before. Taking them to a tailor and have them hemmed is one option or you could do it yourself and save yourself the money. It's not hard to hem a pair of pants so they look as though a tailor did it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 pair of pants (1 pair that fits in length)
  • Needle
  • Matching thread
  • Hem gauge (sewing ruler)
  • Material chalk
  • Straight pins
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Gather the materials needed for the project. Sit in a well-lit area, preferably under a lamp. With the tape measure, measure the length of the inseam of the pair of pants that fit you well. The inseam is the seam on the inside of the leg that goes to the crotch. Begin measureing from the crotch down to the bottom of the leg.

  2. Step 2

Turn the pair of pants that needs hemming, inside out. Now measure the inseam of one leg. With a straight pin, mark the exact same length as the pants that fit you. Before cutting, add two inches to that length with the hem guage and mark it with the fabric chalk all the way around the leg of the pants.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the measuring for the other leg, add two inches, and mark it with the fabric chalk. With the scissors, begin cutting on the chalk line of the leg. Cut them all the way around and remove the excess material. Repeat on the other leg.

  4. Step 4

Fold the material in towards the wrong side of the material two inches. Straight pin the material in place. Continue pinning the material up two inches all the way around both legs. Cut a length of thread long enough to wrap around the pants leg two and a half times. Thread the needle with the matching thread and pull both ends together. Tie them in a large enough knot so when you pull the needle through the material, it does not pull the thread all the way through, the knot stops it.

  5. Step 5

At one of the seams, fold back the very top of the folded up material. Catch two threads of the pants leg and two or three threads of the folded material. Continue this all the way around the leg of the pants. Knot the thread close to the last stitch several times and cut off excess. Repeat this on the other leg. Turn the pants right side out and press the hem into the bottom of the pants. The newly hemmed pants are ready for wear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your thread is as close to the color of the pants as you can possibly get.
  • Do not cut your pants the exact length of the ones that fit you. You must add 2 inches before cutting.
