Fortune tellers (also known as cootie catchers) have long been a favorite folded-paper project for kids and preteens. The flaps and sections of these folded creations are filled with the fortunes of the teller's choosing. Instructions

    • 1

Cut your sheet of paper into an 8 1/2-inch square.

    • 2

Lay the paper in front of you. Fold the square in half from the top edge to the bottom edge and crease. Unfold the square. Fold the square in half from one side edge to the other side edge and crease. Open the square. You now have two intersecting crease lines across your square that form four smaller squares at each corner.

    • 3

Fold each corner to the center intersection and crease. When all four corners are done, you will have formed a smaller square. Do not unfold the paper.

    • 4

Flip the square over with the folded flaps on the bottom. Fold each new corner to the center intersection and crease. This forms another smaller square. Do not unfold the paper and do not turn it over.

    • 5

Fold the top edge to the bottom edge of the new square and crease. Unfold the square. Fold from one side edge to the other side edge of the new square and crease. Unfold the square. This is to create horizontal valleys on your fortune teller.

    • 6

Fold the top left corner to the bottom right corner and crease. This forms a triangle. Open the triangle. Fold the top right corner to the bottom left corner and crease. This forms another triangle. Open the triangle. This is to create diagonal valleys on your fortune teller.

    • 7

Pick the fortune teller up and push in on the center. This will cause the fortune teller to fold inward. Continue to push as is naturally brings the outer corners of the square to the center. Place your thumbs and index fingers under each of the outer flaps that pop out at each corner. The fortune teller will resemble a flower with four petals.

    • 8

Decorate the origami fortune teller with words, numbers, colors or stickers. There are three tiers to a fortune teller with four sections each. The outer petals, the valleys between the pinched petals and the flaps of each pinched petal. Each tier and sections of the tiers will be decorated with something different. The fortune recipient will pick a section of each tier, one at a time, to reveal the fortune.
