How to Crochet and Embroider Valentine's Garland

Make a Valentine's Day decoration or gift by crocheting a heart garland. Personalize the garland by embroidering letters on each heart to spell out your message. The hearts on this garland measure about 2 ½ inches across. You can make it larger or smaller by selecting a different yarn or thread.

• Worsted weight yarn
• Size I crochet hook
• Embroidery needle
• Embroidery thread

Instructions

1. Decide what you want to write on your heart garland. Calculate the number of hearts you need for the message, including a blank heart between each word.

2. Chain 25, and in the fourth chain from the hook make 3 treble crochet. In the same stitch, do 3 double crochet and chain 1. Then, do 1 treble crochet and chain 1.

3. Keep working in the same stitch and do 3 more double crochet, followed by 3 treble crochet. Chain 2 and then slip stitch.

4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to create a heart garland of the length you wish. When you reach that point, cut the yarn and fasten it off.

5. Embroider letters on the hearts to write your message. Select a color of embroidery thread that contrasts with the color of the crocheted hearts. Thread your needle and form the letter by first making a running stitch. A running stitch involves pulling the needle up and down through the heart in small, even stitches.

6. Bring your thread back up to the front side after you form the outline of the letter. Go back over the letter, weaving the thread in and out of the running stitches you just created to make the writing thicker and easier to read.
