Instructions

    • 1

Read your Sunday newspaper, and then crinkle it up into balls.

    • 2

Place newspaper all over your fridge and freezer so that it is completely covered.

    • 3

Spray the newspaper with water until it is completely wet.

    • 4

Allow the fridge to run as normal for five days. During this time, the combination of evaporating water and paper will soak up the nasty smell. It should be noted that you will have to turn your freezer to the lowest setting to avoid getting frozen newspaper balls in your freezer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other popular methods of removing fridge odor include washing the entire fridge out with a vinegar and water solution, placing fresh coffee grinds or boxes of baking soda on each shelf and even using trays of cat litter. However the newspaper method has been known to rid the fridge of deep smells.

  • If your fridge or freezer has been off for several days (this is common in apartments between tenants), check for mold on the interior of the fridge. If mold has built up, there is nothing you can do to rid the smell. Accessing that mold to clean it would literally mean tearing the plastic fridge covering away. In this case, it's time to ask your landlord for a new fridge if is covered in the lease.

I agree that activated carbon is by far the best. I also am a big fan of that product called FRIDGE IT. Been using it for some time in fridge and many other places around my house to get rid of odors.

Activated carbon works the best which is why newspapers work somewhat (it's the carbon in the ink). I found a product called fridge-It odor absorbers which works the best in my refrigerator. Made by a company called Innofresh Products
