How to Write a Graduation Present Thank You Letter

A school graduation is an achievement often commemorated with gifts from friends and family members. Whether you've received a check, a gift card, a sweater or an interesting trinket, ensure you thank the person who gave it to you with a kind letter of appreciation. Consider these tips when writing the notes.

Instructions

    • 1

Write and mail your thank you letters as soon as possible after receiving the gift (particularly if it's cash or a check) so the person will know you received it. Handwrite the note instead of typing it on the computer. It's proper etiquette to send an actual card as opposed to an email of thanks.

    • 2

Express gratitude for the kind gesture, and let the person know how you plan to use the gift if she gave you cash or a gift card. Even if you plan to use the money to buy a new video game, for example, consider listing a "practical" item, such as supplies for your first year of college, an outfit for a job interview or something you need for your room.

    • 3

Discuss what you plan to do after graduation, particularly if you haven't seen each other in awhile. You can also let them know how other members in your family (such as younger brothers and sisters) are doing just to keep them up to date.

    • 4

Say something positive in the letter even if you didn't particularly like the gift. For example, "Thank you so much for thinking of me. Green has always been my favorite color," is a nice way to show appreciation for an odd-looking dress, jacket or sweater that you'll probably never wear.
