How to Make Pine Oil Disinfectant

Pine oil disinfectant is a terrific all purpose disinfectant, making it one of the most practical supplies in the cleaning closet. Unfortunately, commercial pine oil disinfectants can be expensive, and often contain added chemicals that aren't really necessary. It's easy to make your own pine oil disinfectant, and better yet, it's easy on the budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Large saucepan
  • 6 cups hot water
  • Large bowl or container for mixing
  • 1 cup soap flakes
  • Large wooden spoon
  • 1 1/3 cups pine oil
  • Airtight container

Instructions

      Heat 6 cups of water in a large saucepan.

      Pour the hot water into a large mixing bowl or container and add 1 cup of soap flakes very carefully. Use a large wooden spoon to stir the mixture very slowly so it won't bubble. If it does, stop stirring and skin the foam off the top of the mixture.

      Add the pine oil very slowly as you continue to stir.

      Store 1 1/3 cups of pine oil disinfectant in an airtight container and use as needed.

      Dilute the pine oil disinfectant with equal parts water when you're ready to use it. Wipe it on and scrub it with a brush, then rinse it off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't dilute the pine oil disinfectant with water when cleaning germ-ridden or high bacteria areas such as toilet bowls.

  • Dilute a small amount of pine oil disinfectant and use it in a spray bottle for added convenience.

  • Be sure to keep pine oil disinfectant out of the reach of children and animals.
