Perfumed dusting powders have been in use for centuries. Especially beneficial in warm weather, dusting powder helps keep skin comfortable. The addition of baking soda contributes a deodorizing property, and cornstarch absorbs moisture to keep the skin cool and dry. Choose your favorite perfume oil or essential oil(s) to customize your dusting powder. Packaged in an attractive shaker or flat container with a powder puff, perfumed dusting powder makes a great gift. Vary the fragrance to suit the recipient—man, woman or child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup rice flour or tapioca starch
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 10 to 15 drops essential oil(s)
  • 1 large cotton ball
  • Large glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
  • Shaker container or flat lidded container with powder puff
  1. Step 1

Combine cornstarch, rice flour or tapioca starch, baking soda and arrowroot powder in a nonreactive metal or ceramic bowl. Whisk to combine.

  2. Step 2

Drop 10 to 15 drops of essential or perfume oil onto a large cotton ball. Use a single scent or blend complementary scents.

  3. Step 3

Pour half of the powder mixture into a large, clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add the scented cotton ball, and pour the remaining powder mixture into the jar. Seal the jar and shake to mix.

  4. Step 4

Place jar in a cool, dark place and let sit for a week to cure. Shake jar every couple of days to distribute scent evenly throughout the powder.

  5. Step 5

Open jar and see if aroma is satisfactorily strong. If you would prefer a stronger-smelling powder, remove the cotton ball and add a few more drops of oil to it. Return it to the jar, seal, shake and let sit for 2 or 3 more days.

  6. Step 6

Spoon into a shaker container or a flat container with a lid. If using the latter, add a powder puff for dusting.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent clumping, avoid dropping essential or perfume oil(s) directly into the powder. Instead, drop them onto a cotton ball and bury this within the powder.
  • Before using any essential or perfume oil in a product to be applied to the body, make sure that it is approved for this purpose. Purchase cosmetic-grade essential and perfume oils at health food stores.
