How to Pass the GED

The GED is a high school equivalency test for people who weren’t able to graduate from high school. The GED will measure your knowledge through a battery of five tests and offers those who never completed high school a chance to further their education and career and to fulfill a desire for personal achievement. You need to prepare for the GED, which means you have to study.

Take a GED refresher course. Many community colleges offer refresher courses for people who are studying to take the GED test. In this class you will review the subjects you will be tested on which include math, language arts, writing, reading, social studies and science. There is usually a one-time fee for the class. The class provides a great opportunity to go over the material that will be on the exam.

Buy a GED study guide. You can find these in just about any bookstore where educational books are sold. This guide contains a lot of practice material and you can check your answers in the back of the book. There are also practice tests and quizzes in the books. You should time yourself while doing the practice tests since the GED test is timed per section.

Get a tutor, if you feel you need more one-on-one help. Having someone help you in the subjects you have the most difficulty with can increase your chances of passing your GED exam. A tutor can break down the material in a way that you understand and also give you pointers and relaxation techniques to use during the exam.

    • 4

Talk to someone who took the GED test. This person can give you an idea of what to expect and offer some tips to help you pass the test. He can tell you what he did in order to pass and answer any further questions you may have.

Study hard for the test. Although you can retake the GED test if you fail, give yourself enough time to study and get comfortable with the material so you can do your very best the first time. Many people get nervous when they have to take exams. Being nervous can cause you to make more mistakes than if you were relaxed. If you have studied the material, you shouldn’t have a problem passing the GED test. Don’t attempt to take the test without studying even if you’re familiar with the subjects on the test. It’s always best to review the material beforehand.
