Crochet rick-rack is simple to make and looks pretty in both variegated and solid colors, it's usually worked in fine thread but can be a novel surprise when made in worsted yarn or heavy cotton! By making your own rick-rack you have far more control over the width, size and color than you ever could buying from the store!

Tips & Warnings

  • Gauge: You choose the size that you want the rick-rack to be by thread/yarn weight and hook.
  • How to apply rick-rack: Rick-rack is frequently applied by hand stitching with matching thread to the item being decorated. If you're not much for hand sewing it also looks good straight stitched through the middle by machine, or if the item you're making won't be washed it could simply be glued on.
  • When worked in fine thread rick-rack is great for giving pillowcases a timeless touch, it's also good for embellishing aprons, book covers, scrapbook pages, cards, head scarves, curtains, waste bands, dresses, skirts, cuffs, hats, shirts, jeans and bags!
  • Chunky rick-rack made from heavy cotton or worsted weight yarn would be cute added to children's items such as blankets, bags, winter scarves, mittens, hats, pillows, aprons, doll's clothes, play dog leash, or curtains. It could also be incorporated in handmade boutique style dresses and pants as edging! Since yarn comes in so many colors big rick-rack is great for bringing in splashes of fun, bright color!
  • After you've made your rick-rack, why stop there? It's really cute to add personal touches to rick-rack that's already been applied to a project, such as embroidered flowers, beads, sequins or other findings.
  • Be sure to follow the washing instructions on your thread or yarn, or your work may be ruined!
