Instructions

    • 1

Thread a darning needle with strong cotton thread to match the color of the fabric in need of repair. Be sure to put a knot at the end of the thread.

    • 2

Place fabric on a darning egg and hold in place around the egg's base with your least dominate hand. Be sure to center the hole in the fabric over the top of the egg for greater accuracy.

    • 3

Begin on the left-hand side of the hole, pushing the needle firmly into the fabric and pulling the thread across to the other side of the hole.

    • 4

Place the needle back into the fabric on the right-hand side of the hole. The needle should come through the fabric, hit the egg and come out in the hole. Tug on the thread to tighten this weave.

    • 5

Pull the thread and needle across the length of the hole back to the left side before pushing into the underside of the fabric and back up to the top of the fabric, and then repeat. You want to repeat the steps until you have completely woven across the hole horizontally.

    • 6

Turn the fabric 180 degrees and begin to repeat steps 2 through 5, sewing across the hole in the opposite direction. Be sure to pull each weave taut and bring the needle back up into the fabric a good distance from the edge of the hole. This ensures that the fabric doesn't continue to rip after darning.

    • 7

Weave the opposing stitches up, across and down each line of the opposing weave. Secure the end of the thread after covering the entire surface of the hole in the opposite direction. Snip any loose threads with a pair of sharp scissors.
