How to Wash a Baby in a Sink

Many people choose to use their sink to wash their baby instead of purchasing a baby bath tub. You may also need to use a sink if you are traveling with your baby and do not have the room or means to take along her bath tub. While using the sink may seem like an easy way to go, there are some differences in it compared to a tub. Follow these steps to wash your baby in the sink.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 container baby hair and body wash
  • 1 sink
  • 1 washcloth
  • 1 hand towel
  • 1 bath towel
  • 1 plastic cup
  1. Step 1

Start out by filling the sink with about 4 inches of warm water. Check to make sure the temperature of the water is not too hot. Water that may seem warm to an adult may be too hot for an infant. Err on the side of caution and make the water a little cooler to be safe.

  2. Step 2

Pour 1 cap full of the hair and body wash into the sink as you fill it with water. This will give the bath a bubble bath effect.

  3. Step 3

Fold the hand towel in half and place it over the faucet after you have finished running the water. This will pad the hard faucet in case the baby bumps into it during the bath.

  4. Step 4

Place the baby in the sink. Be sure to support the baby's head and neck with your arm the entire time she is in there. Wet the wash cloth and apply hair and body wash to it.

  5. Step 5

Wash the baby from head to toe with the soapy wash cloth. Make sure that you wash her hair as well. Use the plastic cup to pour water over the baby to rinse her.

  6. Step 6

Take the baby out of the sink very carefully so as not to hit the faucet. Dry her off completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a sink with a deep basin and a faucet that can swing out of the way if available. Kitchen sinks usually have this function and are great places to do this.
  • Remove all items from within a 6 inch radius of the sink before you attempt this. You do not want the baby to grab and knock over something that may be toxic to her.
  • Lay out everything that you will need within grabbing distance of the sink. You will not be able to walk away once you begin washing the baby.
