How to Pack Backpack Snacks
For day hikes and other adventures, a solid snack plan is a must to keep your energy and enthusiasm up during the whole trip. Here are some travel-friendly ideas for your next backpack excursion.
Instructions

1
Peanut butter and tortilla sandwiches. You can also add honey or jelly to sweeten things up. Tortillas, pita and bagels are great alternatives to regular bread because they are not easily smooshed.
-
2
Granola mix. You can buy all types of pre-packaged mixes or create your own combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and cereal. If it's warm outside, skip the chocolate chips or M&M's or your mix will turn from gorp to goop.

3
Fig Newtons and animal crackers can both withstand some abuse in a backpack.
-
4
Although they are bulky, apples and oranges are difficult to bruise. They are also very refreshing after eating too many peanut butter and tortilla sandwiches.
-
5
Grapes can survive unscathed if placed near the top of your bag or in an outer pocket.
-
6
Dried fruit is extremely packable and leaves no skin or core to throw away.
-
7
Beef jerky gives you a dose of protein. Look for a low-salt version or drink plenty of water with it.
-
8
Energy bars and granola bars are made for travel. Stick with a brand and flavor that you have tried before--leave the experimenting when you are closer to home.
-
9
A block of cheese goes well with everything. Pack this near a chilled water bottle to keep it fresh.
-
10
Carrot and celery sticks. Don't forget your vegetables! Although celery alone won't stick to your ribs, it's a perfect match for peanut butter.
-
11
For a special treat, bring small packets of individual drink mixes (tea, lemonade, hot chocolate) and mix with your water.

I love the tortilla idea. Can't tell you how many smooshed sandwiches I've pulled out of my backpack on the trail. Never again. -

Yes! Triscuits or something thick and hearty could probably survive without getting crumbly. -

Great ideas! A few whole grain crackers would go great with the cheese. :)
