How to Caricature
The art of caricature means creating a good likeness of someone or something while also adding a humorous exaggeration or slant. Creating a caricature can be easier than you think, however, and doesn't have to require drawing talent. You can draw or perform a caricature, but no matter how you create your caricature remember to offer a good blend of likeness and exaggeration.

1
Draw a caricature by first sketching a basic outline for a good likeness of a person. Your initial sketch can be cartoon-like, but don't exaggerate the features yet.
-
2
Look at your original drawing and compare to a photograph to see what features of the person's face stand out the most. Exaggerate these defining features. Remember that exaggeration doesn't have to mean making something bigger--you may also make small features smaller.

3
Be aware that exaggeration may severely alter the shape of the face. As you alter the features, check to make sure that caricature is still recognizable. You may want to start with a famous face so that you can get other people's quick opinions as you practice.
-
4
Use the same principles of caricature drawing to perform a caricature for a costume party or play. First concentrate on creating a likeness. Make yourself a list of all of the realistic elements of costume, makeup, hair and props that you would need to create an effective likeness of a person.
-
5
Exaggerate all of the elements of your performance that define the person you are creating a caricature of. For example, if you are trying to create a caricature for George Bush, you might want to wear a large flag pin, draw deep wrinkles in your forehead and practice exaggerated versions of his mannerisms and speech.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that the elements of caricature can transfer to any type of character creation. If you want to caricature a musician in your own musical performance, for example, the same principles of likeness and exaggeration would apply. Any time you can pinpoint distinctive features that make an individual recognizable, you can parody and caricature those things.
