How to Steam Crab

This classic recipe is one of the spicier ways to enjoy fresh crab. Serves 4.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Mix vinegar, beer and Worcestershire sauce.

  2. Step 2

    Pour mixture into a steamer or large pot with a rack.

  3. Step 3

    Rinse hard-shell crabs in water.

  4. Step 4

    Place one layer of live hard-shell crabs into steamer or on pot rack and add seafood seasoning and a dash of cayenne pepper to them.

  5. Step 5

    Pile on more layers of crabs and seasoning until all crabs are in the pot and seasoned.

  6. Step 6

    Cover securely with lid.

  7. Step 7

    Steam about 25-30 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can substitute water for beer; balsamic vinegar for regular vinegar.
  • Watch out for live crabs' pincers.

on 6/17/2009 You want to have about two inches of water in bottom of kettle that will hold one bushel. You could pour in a couple of beers. I wouldn't even put seasoning on crabs until after they are steamed. Putting it when you steam them just makes it a wet mess. Make sure the steam can escape some at the top. Once you get the steam rolling big time you want to cook them 30 minutes, but you have to have a large flame from a propane burner. It won't get hot enough on an electric stove.
