How to Buy Fasteners for Utility Shelves

Utility shelves come in all shapes, sizes and materials. The kind of fasteners you need depends on the type of shelf you are installing and what kind of wall you have. A utility shelf can be a great addition to any workroom, but will only be beneficial if it stays put as you load it up with tools and equipment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Buy a heavy-duty masonry fastener if you are attaching the shelves to cement or cinder block walls. Use a drill bit that can handle the concrete without breaking.
Step2
Look for kits that include the proper kind of fasteners when you purchase your utility shelves. Read the enclosure panel on the box before heading to the cash register. There might be another brand on the shelf that does include the proper fasteners if the one you chose does not.
Step3
Try 3-inch deck screws to attach a wooden utility shelf to a wall. Add an anchor to the wall if you will be putting heavy items on the shelves. The more stability you can add with the fasteners, the less trouble you will have with the shelves later.
Step4
Think about the kind of material to which you will be fastening the utility shelves before you buy different fasteners. Look at the rating of the fasteners and their recommended uses. Don't try to rig something to work that is not meant for the job.
