There are many variations on this popular roll. Sometimes the outside is wrapped in rice or cucumber instead of nori (seaweed). Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Place cellophane on the maki-su (bamboo mat).

      Spread 1 c. sushi rice over the cellophane and top it with a sheet of nori (seaweed). (See Related eHows for instructions on making sushi rice.)

      Spread crab salad or strips of crab on the nori. Use about 2 to 4 tbsp. salad or about 3 strips of crab.

      Top with two to three strips of thinly sliced avocado.

      Roll the sushi. (See "How to Make a Sushi Roll," under Related eHows, for details.)

      Place the sushi roll on the cutting board.

    • 7

      Sprinkle with tobiko (flying fish roe) and/or sesame seeds.

      Slice into six pieces.

      Serve with soy sauce, wasabi and vinegared ginger.

Tips & Warnings

  • Obtain a maki-su, nori and other Japanese ingredients at Asian markets or at some supermarkets.
