    Clean Unfinished Hardwood Floors

  1. Step 1

Sweep or vacuum your unfinished hardwood floor thoroughly to remove any dust, hair or lint.

  2. Step 2

Fill a spray bottle with warm water and add a few drops of Murphy's Oil Soap. Turn the nozzle of the spray bottle until only a fine mist is released when you depress the trigger.

  3. Step 3

Mist the oil soap mixture evenly on the floor, starting in a corner of the room. Spray only a 4 ft by 4 ft section of flooring at a time with a very fine mist to avoid causing water damage to the unfinished hardwood. Use a soft, clean, dry mop to thoroughly and quickly wash the floor.

  4. Step 4

Using a soft, dry cloth, completely dry the floor immediately after you've finished mopping. Be sure that the area is completely dry before moving on to the next 4 ft by 4 ft section of hardwood flooring.

  5. Step 5

After you've finished cleaning your unfinished hardwood floor, you'll need to rinse it to remove any residue left behind by the oil soap. Mix 1-cup of white vinegar or 1/4-cup of borax with water and add the mixture to a spray bottle. You'll use the same method as described above: working in small sections, mopping thoroughly and drying completely before moving on to the next section. By now, your hardwood flooring should be spotless and if you've followed the directions precisely, no one will ever be able to tell you used water on your unfinished floor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drying your hardwood flooring can wreak havoc on your knees if you're not wearing knee pads.
  • Check with your hardwood flooring manufacturer before applying any form of liquid to your floor. The manufacturer may be able to recommend other cleaning methods if your style of hardwood flooring is especially susceptible to water damage.
  • Be very careful to not soak your unfinished hardwood flooring or leave mist standing for long periods of time to avoid a raise in the woodgrain that will have to be sanded smooth again.
