How to Clean a Coconut

Coconuts can be a bit difficult to open, but once they are, cleaning them is easy. You will be rewarded with a delicious, sweet juice once you open a fresh coconut and clean it well. Read these easy directions to learn how to do so.

Things You'll Need

  • Coconut
  • Saw
  • Eye protection
  • Water
  • Dish towel

How To Clean a Coconut Easily

  • Select a coconut.

  • Clean whatever strands of husk remain on the coconut’s shell.

  • Locate the three “eyes,” or spots, on one end of the coconut. Find the soft one, which is the one that stands by itself.

  • Clean the area around the soft eye with a knife, then dig out the covering. You may be able to dig right into the inside of your coconut, providing it is soft enough and your knife small enough.

  • Drain the coconut water into a small cup or dish.

  • Saw the shell in half carefully.

  • Rinse out the inside of the coconut shell, as well as the edges. You may also want to scrape off the edge of the coconut with a knife, to remove any dust the saw may have created.

  • Let drain on a clean towel.

  • Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings

  • Use eye protection when opening a coconut, as pieces can fly easily.
