Step 1
Leave a bowl of white vinegar out, whether the offensive smelling area is in the bathroom, kitchen or your teenager’s room. The vinegar absorbs a lot of the odor. You can use it to get nasty smells out of the microwave, too. Just put a bowl of vinegar in the microwave and leave the door open for a bit. If you have a basement and it smells like a typical basement, vinegar will take that damp smell out of the air.

Step 2
Simmer citrus fruit or make apple cider. Citrus peels have essential oils in them. Save the peels to simmer when you need a freshener. If you are making apple cider, be sure to use cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmeg. Your house will smell like heaven for quite a few hours after making this, and you will have a wonderful drink. Cider can be drunk either hot or cold.
-
Step 3
Cut up an apple and place it near the offensive smell. If you have a particularly stinky trashcan that’s not quite ready to be emptied out or a stinky litter box, place a cut up apple near by. The apple will soak up the odors. Save a small decorative glass jar, and put sliced apples in the jar, and set the jar in your bathroom. Do not put the lid on the jar, unless the lid has large slits in it.

Step 4
Clean with baking soda. Not only can you pour baking soda down the drains for cleaner smelling sinks and tubs, but you can make a paste out of baking soda and water, and using a scrubbie sponge, scrub up any messes. Baking soda is a great odor neutralizer, so put a fresh box in the refrigerator, too.
