How to Wallpaper Around Windows


Whether you are installing wallpaper on all four walls in a room or just on one wall chances are you will have to paper around a window at some point. For the inexperienced wallpaper hanger this can be the most difficult part of the project. Don't let the window get in your way. Use this guide to help you install wallpaper around a window.

Things You'll Need

  • Wallpaper
  • Ladder
  • Scissors or utility knife
  • Pencil
  • Place the full sized piece of paper over the opening for the window to gauge how much of the paper you will have to remove before hanging

  • Using a pencil mark the area of the wallpaper that you will need to cut out in order to paper around the window. Leave at least two inches of excess paper around the opening.

  • Using scissors or a utility knife cut the rough opening in the paper for your window.

  • Prep the paper for hanging and hang as you normally would.

  • After the paper is hung around the window complete the process by cutting at an angle from the center of the window corner to the edge of the excess paper.

  • Fold the excess paper over into the recess of the window and secure with wall paper paste.

  • Apply matched pieces to the interior frame of the window to complete the finished look.

Tips & Warnings

  • If at all possible have a friend or family member help you. An extra pair of hands can make wallpapering around a window easier.
  • When applying paste to the wallpaper, remember that the wetness will cause the paper to expand.
