Dorothy Gale is a beloved character from "The Wizard of Oz." She is also the hero of the books and the darker Disney sequel, "Return to Oz." In the movie, Dorothy was moved from Kansas to Oz in the midst of a startling tornado. Here is how you can make a Dorothy Gale costume based on the character in the beloved classic film.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plain white shirt
  • Blue and white checkered pinafore dress
  • 2 blue hair ribbons
  • White tights
  • Ruby slippers (red shoes will do)
  • Picnic basket
  • Plush Toto
  1. Step 1

Jump in feet first. Start with getting a great pair of ruby slippers. A simple pair of red slippers or plain red shoes will do the trick. For small children, make stores sell ruby-esque shoes. Don't be afraid to shop around, and you are very likely to find some in no time.

  2. Step 2

Get white tights to wear with your shoes. They should be a crisp white color.

  3. Step 3

Gather a plain white shirt. This will go under your dress.

  4. Step 4

Make, or buy, a blue and white checkered dress. These are easily found around Halloween, or you can get one year-round online or at a costume shop. They are easy to make as well. It should be a simple blue and white checkered dress, and it needs to come in at the waist. Besides that, your imagination is your limit.

  5. Step 5

Work on the hair. Carefully part the hair right down the middle. Pull each side into a braid. This works best on long hair, but short hair can be done as well. Complete the look with two pale blue ribbons at the end of your braids.

  6. Step 6

Grab an open-face picnic basket, and put a plush gray dog inside to play Toto.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a group together to go as the entire Oz cast of characters for added fun.
  • Don't wear too much make-up with a Dorothy costume. She's an innocent girl.
