Grease stains on silk clothing or furniture can be difficult to manage. Silk is an extremely delicate fabric that requires special handling. Removing a grease stain from silk isn't as simple as stain-treating and washing in the washing machine. Learn how to remove grease stains from silk in this article.

  • Liquid dish detergent

How to Remove Grease Stains From Silk

  1. Step 1

Flatten the section of silk with the stain on it. Clothes or drapes can easily lie flat. If the stain is on a piece of furniture, smooth the section of fabric.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle cornstarch on the stain. Pat the cornstarch into the stain, pressing to make a thick layer. Leave the cornstarch on the stain for 24 hours.

  3. Step 3

Brush the cornstarch away from the stain and shake the piece of silk or brush it hard (if it is on a piece of furniture). The cornstarch should absorb the grease. If more cleaning is required, continue with Step 4.

  4. Step 4

Rub a small amount of liquid dish detergent into the grease stain on the silk. Let it sit for a few hours.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the dish detergent from the stain. Let the fabric dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • For silk-upholstered furniture with grease stains, use as little stain remover as possible.
  • Test the liquid dish detergent on a non-stained section of silk to be certain it won't harm the fabric.
