How to Knit Rib Stitches

Once you know the basic knit and purl stitches the you are ready to knit rib stitches. Rib designs are easy to make and provide a wonderful look for many knits like scarves, socks, afghans and sweaters. This article will explain the basic formula for creating knitted rib work.

• Yarn
• Knitting Needles

1. Cast on an even number of stitches.

2. Decide how wide you want your ribbing to be.

3. For an average size ribbing, knit 2 stitches (k2) and then purl 2 stitches (p2) and repeat the K2 P2 sequence until the end of the row.

4. On the next row, work through both the purl stitches and the knit stitches.

5. Repeat step 4 until the ribbing is the length you would like it to be.
