How to Knit Rib Stitches

Once you know the basic knit and purl stitches the you are ready to knit rib stitches. Rib designs are easy to make and provide a wonderful look for many knits like scarves, socks, afghans and sweaters. This article will explain the basic formula for creating knitted rib work.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Knitting Needles
  1. Step 1

    Cast on an even number of stitches.

  2. Step 2

    Decide how wide you want your ribbing to be.

  3. Step 3

    For an average size ribbing, knit 2 stitches (k2) and then purl 2 stitches (p2) and repeat the K2 P2 sequence until the end of the row.

  4. Step 4

    On the next row, work through both the purl stitches and the knit stitches.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat step 4 until the ribbing is the length you would like it to be.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have fun with knitting. Make what feels right to you!
  • Be sure to never leave needles lying around the house. This can create a safety hazard.
