Many off-the-shelf and over-the-counter smoothies seem full of sugar and dairy — great on the fruit concept but negligent on calories and nutrition. The recipe I am introducing here will not only taste fantastic, but it will fill you up nicely at breakfast, and make your digestive system tick like a Swiss watch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soy or low fat milk
  • Bananas (freeze them a day beforehand at least; it will make your smoothie thick and creamy)
  • Berries (again, frozen is best; try blueberries or strawberries)
  • Flavored or plain low fat yogurt
  • Fiber mix (lasts for at least six months): 200g (7oz) psyllium husk powder, 150g (5oz) oat bran, 150g wheat germ, 200g lecithin granules, 500g (1.6oz) LSA mix (linseed, sunflower seed, almond meal).
  1. Step 1

Put five cut pieces of frozen banana and a small handful of your choice of frozen berries into a blender.

  2. Step 2

Heap one or two tablespoons of the fiber mix.

  3. Step 3

Add three to four tablespoons of low fat yogurt.

  4. Step 4

Pour 400ml or 12oz of soy or non-fat milk

  5. Step 5

Press blend for 15 seconds and you get an awesome breakfast smoothie to go.

Tips & Warnings
  • You could go without freezing the fruit but it will just mean your smoothie will have a more watery texture, as compared to a slushy one.
  • If you really must make it sweeter, just add a splash of apple or berry juice. Remember, this is supposed to be non-fattening, so lay low on the sugar.
  • Don't overdo the fiber mix because too much psyllium husk can actually clog up your intestines, as opposed to flushing them. Also, it may make your smoothie too thick and hard to pour out of the blender.
