How to Write General Intercessions for a Wedding

Writing an intercession prayer for a wedding needn't cause you to lose sleep at night or to become a religious zealot. In order to write out a prayer for your own or a loved one's wedding, you need some thoughtful insight, time in the scriptures and poetic style. Knowing your role and the reason you were asked to write this prayer is important, too. Follow these guidelines to write general intercessions for a wedding.

1. Take some time to think about who each partner in the couple is and why God has paired them. Consider what you've seen of their process in getting together, how they've grown into one and what might be some of the struggles they'll face as life partners.

2. Do a quick study in the Bible of the original intent of marriage. Look at how God views it and at the larger picture of why two people marry. Find biblical support for what marriage foreshadows and represents on Earth.

3. Put some music on. It could be your own favorite music or music the couple likes. Create a mood and an ambiance that you can write in.

4. Write a prayer from your heart for the couple getting married. Sounding preachy puts people off, as do overly religious terms and Christianese. Speak from your heart and keep your words as concise as possible. Think of it as writing something that you'd read to the two of them in your living room before the Lord.

5. Add a little flair to your intercession. Make it musical or poetic. Add some humor and delight, or anything that makes the prayer reflect you. Marriage is a gift, and prayer is just talking to God. Talk to God for the couple as you would if you were talking to a good friend.
