How to Crochet Baby Socks

A homemade baby present is always appreciated by a new mother or a mother-to-be. A quick and easy gift is a pair of crocheted baby socks. They take less time and less yarn than a baby blanket or layette set and make a perfect shower gift. You can customize the color to the baby's sex or the nursery decor.

Things You'll Need

  • 1.75 oz. ball sport weight yarn

Instructions

  1. Make the Cuff

    • 1

Check your gauge. Do a test swatch of at least 2 inches by 2 inches. Your gauge for the following pattern should be 6 single crochet stitches and seven rows of single crochet equal 1 inch. Make two socks.

    • 2

Start with the sock cuff. Chain 15. For the first row, do one single crochet in the second chain loop from hook, then make a single crochet in each loop to the end, for a total of 14 stitches. The rest of the crochet stitches in the cuff will be through the back loops of the stitches.

    • 3

Crochet the second row by making one single crochet in each of the 14 stitches, chain one and then turn. Make rows three through 28 exactly the same way.

    • 4

Use a slip stitch to connect each stitch in row 29 to the corresponding stitch in row one. This will make a ribbed tube. Turn the tube inside out.

    Create the Heel

    • 5

Begin the foot with the right side of the cuff facing you. Chain one, then single crochet at the base of the chain, and make one single crochet on the end of each ribbing row, and slip-stitch to join to the first single crochet, for 29 single crochet stitches.

    • 6

Continue with the heel. Crochet through both loops for the following rows. For rows one through six, make one single crochet at the base of the chain one, make one single crochet in each of the next 13 single crochets, chain one and turn.

    • 7

Decrease in row seven by making one single crochet in the next five single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, make one single crochet in each of the next five single crochets, chain one and turn (12 single crochets total). For row eight, make one single crochet in each single crochet, chain one and turn (12 single crochet).

    • 8

Make a single crochet in each of the next four single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, and fold the heel over with the wrong side facing you as you work row nine. Continue row nine by slip-stitching the next single crochet to the fourth single crochet on this row, slip-stitch the next single crochet to the third single crochet of the row, slip-stitch the next crochet to the second single crochet of this row, slip-stitch the last single crochet to the first single crochet of this row, chain one and turn the heel to the right side.

    Finish the Foot

    • 9

Turn the sock so the wrong side is facing you. For round one of the foot, divide nine single crochets evenly along the edge of the heel rows, make one single crochet in the next 14 single crochets, divide another nine stitches along the other edge of the heel rows, slip-stitch to join, chain one and turn (32 single crochets made).

    • 10

Do another decrease in round two. Make one single crochet in the next seven single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, make one single crochet in the next 10 single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, make one single crochet in the next seven single crochets, slip stitch to join, chain one and turn (28 single crochet made).

    • 11

Complete round three by making one single crochet in the next six single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, make one single crochet in the next eight single crochets, stitch two single crochets together twice, make one single crochet in the next six single crochets, slip-stitch to join and turn (24 stitches made).

    • 12

Stitch one single crochet in each single crochet, slip stitch, chain one and turn for rounds four through 14 (24 stitches).

    • 13

Shape the toe starting with round 15. Make one single crochet in the next four single crochets, stitch two single crochets together. Repeat that three more times, then slip-stitch to join, chain one and turn (20 stitches). For round 16, make one single crochet in each single crochet, slip-stitch to join, chain one and turn (20 stitches).

    • 14

Go on shaping the toe in round 17 by making one single crochet in the next three single crochets and stitching two single crochets together. Repeat three more times, slip-stitch to join, chain one and turn. Make round 18. Make one single crochet in the next two single crochets, stitch two single crochets together and repeat three more times, then slip-stitch to join, chain one and turn (12 single crochets).

    • 15

Finish the toe. For round 19, make one single crochet in the next single crochet, stitch two single crochets together and repeat three times, then slip-stitch, chain one and turn (8 single crochets). Complete by stitching two single crochets together four times. Cut the yarn about 10 inches from the toe, and use the tail and a darning needle to close the end. Fasten the closing and weave in the tail, cutting off any remaining end.

Tips & Warnings

  • A size G hook will make a 3- to 6-month size sock. For small newborns or preemies, use a size C hook, and do 3 foot rounds before you start shaping the toe. For a 6- to 12-month size sock, use a size H hook and follow the pattern as written.

  • For the mother's sake, choose a washable yarn, like an acrylic, cotton or superwash wool to make the socks.

  • If you have trouble understanding the directions for row nine in Step 4, look at the picture of the heel on the crochet and knitting website (see Resources).
