Step 1
Repurpose it. Turn a creative eye on that piece of furniture that you plan to get rid of. Could it be used in another part of your house? Could it be repainted or reworked to meet your current needs or tastes? Spend a little time brainstorming, and you may just find that old piece of furniture is worth hanging on to.

Step 2
Freecycle it. Find your furniture a new home by putting it up for grabs on freecycle.org. You'll get it out of your house, and make someone happy at the same time.

Step 3
Donate it. Give your furniture to a thrift store, domestic abuse shelter or another non-profit of your choosing. Your donation will help others, and net you a tax deduction too.

Scrap it. Steel and aluminum furniture can be sold for scrap, and some plastic furniture can be melted down and reused. Little Tikes furniture, for example, is made of all recyclable plastic. Just put it out with your plastic milk jugs and it will be recycled into something new and exciting.

Sell it. List your furniture in the classifieds; sell it in a yard sale, or consign it. If it's in good shape, it should be easy to convert that old furniture into cash.

Curb it. Place your old furniture out at the curb with a "free" sign, and watch it disappear.

Hand it down. Know someone that's just starting out? Then, offer up your discards. A worn out sofa is sure to beat no sofa at all.
