Step 1
Decide how you want to use your ribbon roses for decorating. They are a beautiful alternative to bows for packages and gift bags but they can also be used a myriad of other ways as well. Ribbon roses can make beautiful table decorations, napkin holders, to decorate plates or glasses and on cakes just to name a few possibilities. They can be used virtually in any way that you might typically use silk flowers.Make sure to figure out how many roses you need, the size(s) you want to use, the colors of choice and how you will adhere the roses. This will make shopping easier and allow you to make certain that you purchase everything you need in one shopping trip.
-
Step 2
If you don't already have ribbon roses on hand, then go to a craft, discount department, dollar, or party store to purchase the amount you need. If you choose to make them yourself, purchase the ribbon you want to use for the roses. It is possible to use silk, grosgrain, or paper ribbon in various widths. The width and thickness of the ribbon you choose, as well as the length of ribbon you use, will determine the ultimate size of your rose. You may also wish to purchase artificial leaves, floral tape, and wire in order to make a stem for your rose. You can make the roses in a single color or make different sizes and shapes of roses in multiple colors. The decision is yours. Be sure to also purchase the proper adhering products like tape, glue, or floral sticky.
-
Step 3
If you are making your ribbon roses, do this before you move on to the next step.
-
Step 4
If you are clustering multiple colors, textures, or sizes of roses together now is the time to accomplish that. Use floral tape and/or wire to finish them off.
-
Step 5
For packages, it is best to use either a large ribbon rose in full bloom or several roses (the same or differing sizes) clustered together and accented with artificial leaves and/or ribbon shreds. You can choose to use matching ribbon around the package as well, if you so choose.
-
Step 6
Use your ribbon shredder to shred ribbon to accent your roses. Most shredders come with two sides. One side is for fine shredding while the other is more moderate in size. Paper ribbon works best for shredding. Most silk, velvet, and grograin ribbons will not shred appropriately.
-
Step 7
Use the open blade of a pair of scissors to curl your ribbon if you want to make ribbon curls out of the ribbon shreds or just out of the ribbon in general. Paper and mylar ribbons work best for this process, however, some other types of ribbons will also curl.
-
Step 8
For gift bags, I suggest using several different sized ribbon roses clustered together and accented with artificial leaves and/or ribbon shreds. These can then be tied on the strings of the bag or placed on top of the tissue paper inside the bag. To keep them together, you may wish to premount them on cardboard with tape or glue.
-
Step 9
To use ribbon roses on a cake, you may opt to use roses that are all the same size or of varying sizes. You may also opt to use roses that are all the same color or in varying colors or differing shades of the same color. You may use either artificial leaves or make leaves out of frosting. When using roses for a cake, use roses that are both full-blown as well as rosebud in shape and in various shades of the same color (like pink, yellow, blue or some other color). Artificial leaves work better than those made of frosting. Roses should be finishing off with floral tape and perhaps mounted on cardboard or aluminum foil or waxed paper before mounting them on the cake. Cover that with frosting so that the roses will look more like a part of the cake.
-
Step 10
If you want to make a long-stem rose for each place setting, make or use ribbon roses that are approximately all the same size. However, if you want to make a ribbon rose table arrangement like a bud vase or even larger arrangement, use roses of various sizes and shapes. You may even wish to use various shades of the same color group (like pink, yellow, blue or some other color). Use floral wire to make the stem and mount artificial leaves along the stem using floral tape to polish the entire piece.
-
Step 11
To make ribbon rose accents for plates, use no more than two roses (one large and one bud) mounted on white cardboard or waxed paper and then adhered temporarily to the plate.
-
Step 12
To use ribbon roses to accent stemware, use two or three rosebuds or a medium sized ribbon rose with artificial leaves mounted on floral wire that can be twined around the glass stem.
-
Step 13
To use ribbon roses for napkins rings, use a single medium sized rose and/or several rosebuds, of varying or all the same size, mounted directly to a plain napkin ring. You can use artificial leaves as accent or use the roses alone.
-
Step 14
To use ribbon roses to accent the table, you can use single roses and/or buds or long stems, of varying or all the same size, laid out in any pattern on the table. Accent them with ribbon shreds to draw more attention to the decor.
