How to Remove Urine Odor From Concrete

There are both natural and commercial solutions for getting rid of the smell of urine in concrete, and both work equally well. The approach you should take depends on whether the stain is fresh or old, and whether there's carpet over the concrete. The cleaning options range from regular club soda to potent cleansers. But, no matter what you're dealing with, you can get rid of that urine odor fairly easily.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Soak the newly stained area of concrete with undiluted club soda. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then blot up the residue soda.

  2. Step 2

Pour straight white vinegar onto older, more stubborn urine odor patches. Continue to pour white vinegar until the smell is gone. Since urine is a base and vinegar is an acid, they destroy each other and form a water solution when you mix them together. Scrub the floor with your favorite cleanser and let dry.

  3. Step 3

Saturate the problem area with an enzymatic cleaner, which breaks down the proteins in urine and neutralizes the odor. Cover it with plastic to keep it moist. Let the concrete dry naturally, which may take as little as 24 hours or as long as several days. Repeat if necessary until the smell is completely gone.

  4. Step 4

Reseal floor with a fresh layer of concrete if you can't get rid of the urine odor. Have a professional pour a ¼- to ½-inch layer of new concrete over the original floor.

on 7/27/2009 Adding 1/4 -1/2 of fresh concrete on top of an existing floor will eventually result in the new concrete cracking and fracturing as it needs to bond in one large mass to adhere properly. I have seen this done before with disasterous results. I would not advise it:)

on 3/21/2009 I was wondering if step 1 through step 3 should be done first before pouring paint or concrete on the garage floor?

on 3/11/2009 I found a great product for killing the urine smell quick it is called whiff whacker and I found it at www.thevetsource.com I first used it to remove the smell of cat from my garage. After I had pressure washed the garage it still smelled like cat I sprayed this stuff on it and came back two hours later to a smell free garage. It is all natural and it works great inside the house too I also used it on the spare bedroom rug after a female Dalmatian made messes on the rug. Now I use this stuff all over.

on 11/25/2008 Concrete is porous, so sealing it with a special paint is better than pouring a new layer of concrete, I think.
