Fish is one of the healthiest foods you can eat, but unfortunately fish odors tend to hang around long after you have enjoyed your meal. Fish can also create an unpleasant odor in your refrigerator and freezer when can last long after the fish is gone. Fortunately, in a few simple steps you can remove that fishy smell once and for all.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Zip close bags
  • Plate or saucer
  • Baking soda
  • Cooler
  • Ice
  • Soapy water
  • Milk
  • Vinegar
Step1
Wrap fish well when storing it in the refrigerator or freezer. Place the fish in two zip close bags so that the moisture is well contained. When defrosting, leave your fish in the baggies and place the fish on a plate or saucer keep the odor and liquids contained.
Step2
Place an open box of baking soda in both your refrigerator and your freezer. Baking soda will help to absorb odors before they take over your refrigerator and can also help to remove odors once present.
Step3
Defrost your freezer at least twice a year to remove any odors that have accumulated. Remove all items from your refrigerator and place any perishable items in a cooler with ice. Allow the freezer ice to melt on it's own, avoiding the temptation to chip away at large chunks, as this can damage your freezer. Once fully melted, wipe out the inside of your refrigerator and freezer with warm, soapy water to remove odors.
Step4
Soak your fish in a bowl of milk for about 1/2 hour before cooking. Instead of grilling, baking or frying fish, try poaching. Milk as well as poaching your fish in water helps to diffuse the odor causing oils. Poaching is also the healthiest way to prepare fish, as you do not have to add oil.
Step5
Fill a cooking pot with five parts water to one part white vinegar and allow the liquid to boil while cooking your fish. You can leave the water and vinegar to boil after cooking as well. The vinegar helps to absorb and remove fish odors while cooking, leaving your house smelling fresh after your meal.
Step6
Keep fish odors contained while cooking by throwing out any skin, scales and other waste outside of the house. Wash your pots, pans and utensils in hot soapy water and add a splash of vinegar to remove the fishy smell.
