How to Decorate With Tin Cans

Save

Tins cans are the ultimate shabby chic decorating accent. Not only are tin cans easy to find, they can be used as is, painted, or covered in pretty paper. Tins cans make inexpensive vases, flowerpots even storage containers and can be used in any room in the house.

  • Pot annual flowers in several tin cans and group them together on a windowsill or porch step for a charming country vignette. Make a hole in the bottom of each tin can with a hammer and nail, for drainage.

  • Paint large tin cans, like those used for coffee, with acrylic or spray pains for a collection of coordinated storage containers. Keep kids small toys or craft supplies inside.

  • Cover tin cans with pieces of wallpaper and use them as designer pencil holders on a desk or phone message center.

  • Make an impromptu silverware caddy with a collection of 4-6 soup cans placed on a serving tray. Leave the labels on for a 1950s retro look.

  • Leave the labels on cans of pumpkin pie filling and place several branches of autumn berries or dried leaves inside, for a fun harvest look.

  • Transform old coffee tins into kitchen canisters. Cover them with paper and decorate with paint and stencils to match your kitchen decor. Attach a wooden ball with a small screw through the center of the lid for a handle.
